One of the world’s largest dumps for electronic waste, located in the heart of Accra. Much of this waste arrives illegally from Europe, dumped far from the eyes of those responsible. Here, people search for work and valuable materials, burning electronics to extract minerals like copper. Surrounded by sharp scrap and toxic fumes, men, women, and children live and work. A reality unlike anything I had ever seen.
My heart stood still and ached as I witnessed these conditions. Living here is a relentless challenge, yet the children still find moments of joy, and the adults persevere in their daily lives among the mountains of waste.
It’s a haunting reminder of the hidden cost of our throwaway culture.
A child with Kwashiorkor: where toxic e-waste and hunger collide.
