Documentation, 2024
Besesaka is a community-based sports and education program located in Bukom, Accra. With a strong focus on boxing, the initiative combines athletic training with academic support and personal development. As Abigail, a social worker at Besesaka, explains, the program goes beyond physical training, it is about building character, fostering leadership, and creating long-term opportunities for children and young people in economically challenged areas.
The concept of Boxucation (Boxing + Education) reflects their holistic approach: young athletes not only train in the ring but also attend private school, guided by mentors who track their academic and personal progress. The aim is to empower the next generation to grow into confident, resilient individuals who contribute to their communities. Inside and outside the boxing gym.
Milicent was one of the very timid girls when we got her. By now, she is bold. She’s confident in class, she answers questions in class, and she used to shy away from talking or interacting.
